5 Things You Might Not Know About Venus

5 Things You Might Not Know About Venus

Venus is often called Earth’s sister planet because of its similar size and rocky composition. However, beneath its thick atmosphere lies one of the most extreme environments in our Solar System.

From unusual rotation to crushing atmospheric pressure, Venus is full of astronomical surprises.

Here are five fascinating facts about our neighbouring planet.

Five Incredible Venus Facts

  1. A day is longer than a year. Venus takes approximately 243 Earth days to rotate once on its axis but only 225 Earth days to orbit the Sun.
  2. Venus rotates backwards. Unlike most planets, Venus spins in the opposite direction, meaning the Sun would appear to rise in the west and set in the east.
  3. It’s hotter than Mercury. Despite being farther from the Sun, Venus has an average surface temperature of approximately 465°C because of its powerful greenhouse effect.
  4. Its atmosphere is incredibly dense. Surface atmospheric pressure is approximately 92 times that experienced at sea level on Earth.
  5. Venus has clouds of sulphuric acid. Its thick cloud layers contain sulphuric acid droplets, contributing to the planet’s hostile atmospheric conditions.

Earth’s Mysterious Neighbour

Venus reminds us that planets with similar sizes can develop dramatically different environments.

Scientists continue studying its atmosphere, geological history and potential past habitability to understand how it became such an extreme world.

Perhaps future missions will finally reveal more of the secrets hidden beneath those mysterious clouds.
