What to Do on a Long Weekend Monday: Prepare for a Night Under the Stars

Long Weekend Monday

A long weekend Monday doesn’t have to end when the Sun goes down. For amateur astronomers, that extra evening can provide an opportunity to spend some time beneath the night sky without worrying quite as much about the usual Monday routine.

Use the afternoon to prepare rather than rushing outside after dark.

Check your telescope, binoculars and observing accessories. Charge batteries, clean only the equipment that genuinely needs attention and make sure everything you’ll need is ready before the observing session begins.

You can also decide what you’d like to observe beforehand. Depending on conditions and visibility, your targets might include the Moon, planets, double stars, star clusters or brighter deep-sky objects.

Don’t forget comfort. Cape Town’s winter evenings can become cold, so prepare warm clothing, something hot to drink and a comfortable observing position.

You don’t even need a telescope to enjoy the night. Find somewhere with a reasonably clear view of the sky, allow your eyes time to adjust to the darkness and spend a while identifying constellations or watching for satellites.

Astronomy doesn’t always need to involve complicated equipment.

Sometimes the perfect way to finish a long weekend is simply to look up and appreciate what is waiting above us.
